MikeTyson and Jake Paul are set to fight July 20 in Texas, and it’s still almost incomprehensible.
The former heavyweight champion will be 58 at the time of the boxing match. Paul will be 27 and only four years into his professional boxing career.
But it’s very real.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees combat sports in Texas, has sanctioned the scheduled eight-round bout as a pro fight. The rules are unconventional – two-minute rounds, 14-ounce gloves – but the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium could be full when Tyson and Paul climb into the ring.
Some boxing figures have dismissed the fight as an exhibition, but it’s a fascinating matchup with compelling questions.
Does Tyson (50-6, 44 knockouts) have the stamina to land a knockout punch before he tires? (Yes, he fought an eight-round exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, but his last pro fight took place in 2005.)
Does Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) have the chin to survive if Tyson connects? And if he can survive the early rounds, he can outlast or even finish off Tyson with his own impressive power?
Questions will be answered July 20.
